"Travel" through Time at Pottsgrove Manor in 2010!

Saturday, April 10th, 2010,
11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Visit with costumed interpreters and hear their stories of travel, see fashions for travelling during the colonial era, discover 18th century communication skills with a quill pen, and the role of slaves in transport and travel during the 18th century. Visit in the kitchen as the cook discussed foods for travel and fare at an 18th century Inn.

 

 


So Long and Toilsome a Journey:
Transportation in Colonial Pennsylvania
 

The Potts family built a far-reaching ironworking business, enjoyed imported luxury goods, and sent two of their sons overseas for their education. How did they manage it in a world without planes, trains, and automobiles?

Visitors to Pottsgrove ManorŐs new exhibit will learn about the different ways goods, people, and information were transported in the eighteenth century.

The exhibit will run from March 6th, 2010 through January 30th, 2011 and can be viewed while taking a guided tour of the manor house during regular museum hours:

Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. & Sunday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tours are given on the hour; last tour of the day begins as 3:00 p.m.

Suggested donation: $2 per person.

Pottsgrove Manor, home of John Potts, colonial ironmaster and founder of Pottstown, is located at 100 West King Street near the intersection of King Street and Route 100, just off Route 422, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.

 

Visit Pottsgrove Manor's new exhibit to learn about the different ways goods, people, and information were transported in the eighteenth century.
Programming throughout the year will incorporate exhibit themes.

Upcoming events at the Manor:

April 10th
Traveler's Tales Saturday, April 10th 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Visit with costumed interpreters and hear their stories of travel in the 18th century. Watch as the cook prepares food for a journey. Suggested donation: $2 per person.

May 1st
Annual Colonial May Fair Saturday, May 1st 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Celebrate May Day at this annual event. Enjoy a variety of 18th century entertainments & music

June 26th
Open-Hearth Cooking Demonstration: "Far-Away Foods" Saturday, June 26th 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Food historian Deborah Peterson of Deborah Peterson's Pantry will demonstrate open-hearth cooking, utilizing imported foods that would have been available to the colonial cook. Suggested donation: $2 per person.

July 10th
River Walk & Picnic Saturday, July 10th 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pottsgrove Manor staff will lead visitors on a walking tour from the Manor to the Riverfront Park. Along the way, we'll discuss the importance of Manatawny Creek and the Schuylkill River to the ironworking business of the Potts family. We'll stop for a picnic lunch (provided) before heading back to the Manor. Bring water and wear comfortable shoes. Fee: $15 per person. Pre-registration is required; please register by July 6.

September 24th
Homeschool Day Friday, September 24th 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Bring your homeschoolers out to the Manor for a fun-filled and educational day. The manor house will be open for tours, and a variety of hands-on activities will be offered. Ideal for elementary age children. Fee: $5 per child; pre-registration is suggested.

Sunday, October 24th
Lecture: "Native American Trade and Transportation" Sunday, October 24th 1:00 p.m. Local Lenni-Lenape historian Darius Puff will offer a program on Native American travel and trade in Southeastern Pennsylvania. All ages will enjoy this interactive presentation. Suggested donation: $2 per person.

There's lots to do at Pottsgrove Manor!

Volunteers, Guides and Living Historians are an important part of keeping history alive at the Manor.

Whether you have specific talents or just want to be a part of an enduring legacy, there's a part for you to play here.

 

 

Pottsgrove's Volunteers can help monitor the rooms as visitors enjoy the exhibits at yearly events, work in the shop, in the garden, or help gather reseach for special exhibits throughout the year.

Pottsgrove's costumed Interpreters research and dress authentically as the People of Pottsgrove, portraying Potts' family members, servants with historical expertise in household duties, or craftspeople, cooks, musicians and other 18th century personalities.


 


Museum Guides learn the details about the Potts family, their history and the way of life in 18th century Montgomery County, taking guests on guided tours of the house.
